Melbourne hosts the Formula One Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park every year, and that sets the tone. There are two circuits inside the suburbs, a hillclimb in the hills, a show that fills the Royal Exhibition Building with a hundred rare cars, and a Grand Final Eve gathering that sold out with more than a thousand show cars last time. Killer Cars Grand Final Eve (September)
The biggest single-day show of the year happens on the Grand Final Eve public holiday at the Casa D'Abruzzo Club in Epping. The 2025 edition sold out with more than 1,000 show cars, and 2026 is built to beat it: hot rods, classics, Australian and American muscle, Euro, JDM, supercars and bikes, club displays, drag car start-ups, trade stands and a live band from 11am. Ticketed, early entry from 9am, raffle to MYROOM Children's Cancer Charity.

Chopped (September)
The same month, the hot rod and custom crowd heads two hours north-west to Carisbrook Raceway for Chopped: three days of chopped rods, kustoms, burnouts and live bands. A weekend, not a show.

Autoclassica at the Royal Exhibition Building (October)
For three days in late October the Royal Exhibition Building, a World Heritage site, hosts 100 exceptional cars: rare machines, icons, hypercars and collector pieces, with the Australian Concours d'Elegance judged during the event. It is the one show in the state where the building competes with the cars.

October is the busiest month. Low'n'Slow AUS takes over Melbourne early in the month with lowriders, Viclas, custom bikes and classics. Diamond Creek CarFest fills Coventry Oval for its third year, a gold coin to the local fire station. The Dept Car Show returns to Seaworks in Williamstown for two days. And at Calder Park, the Garrett Melbourne Jamboree brings sport compact drag racing to the quarter mile, $35 for adults and under-12s free.

Great Tarmac Rally (October)
Out of Marysville, the Great Tarmac Rally expands in 2026 to a three-day marathon: more than 350 kilometres of closed-road competition over Lake Mountain Road, Reefton Spur and the Eildon to Jamieson road. The longest and hardest edition yet.

Sandown Raceway in Springvale is the circuit in the suburbs, and in November it hosts the Supercars Championship for the Sandown Semi-Finals weekend.

Melbourne Cup weekend belongs to the Toranas: Toranas on the Goldfields runs a Saturday cruise and a Sunday show and shine on Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. GROWL Racing's Performance Pulse at Caribbean Park in Scoresby is a showcase for street-built cars, pitched as the alternative to MotorEx. The Great Escape is four days of driving from the King Valley through the Yarra Valley to Phillip Island. And Drifting Showdown brings three days of PRO, L1 and L2 competition to Calder Park, one of the largest drift events in the country.

Rob Roy hillclimb (October and November)
Rob Roy at Smiths Gully is the hillclimb everyone should watch once. The Interclub Challenge in October has run since 1996 and takes anything from road cars to purpose-built hillclimb machines, $10 a head or $20 a car to watch. The Triple Cup final in November is the MG Car Club's round for pre-1980 cars, with a Come and Try class: untimed runs with an instructor, one-day licence at the gate.

December at the tracks
Sandown closes its year with an endurance weekend: the E30 Enduro, two days of BMW E30s driven to their limits, alongside the 6 Hours of Sandown, round five of the Australian Production Car Enduro Championship. The following weekend Northern Gal's Drift and Classics fills the Calder Park Thunderdome with a show and shine for every kind of car and drift sessions run by Drift Academy. Spectators enter free.

December nights
Melbourne Bike Night at the Shannons Showroom in Heatherton is the city's big motorcycle gathering: show and shine, DJ and food trucks. Then Northern Gal's End of the Year Cruise leaves Campbellfield, stops at Lorbek Luxury Cars in Port Melbourne, and finishes on Beach Road. Free, no tickets, roadworthy cars only.

Autumn 2027: the big indoor shows
Northern Gal opens the year in March with the Girl Power Show at the Shannons Showroom, a free car and bike show of women-owned vehicles. Release the Kraken, the largest 4x4 festival in the country, lands in Victoria the same month with a $300,000 79 Series LandCruiser giveaway for Beyond Blue. The Melbourne Motor Show takes over the Convention Centre for three days in April. And in May, Meguiar's MotorEx returns to the Melbourne Showgrounds as the largest custom and performance car show in the country.
