Kia has an electric people-mover now. The Carens Clavis EV is the brand's first made-in-India EV, and it is built around family duty.
Two Batteries, Real Range
Buyers pick from a 42 kWh or a 51.4 kWh pack. The smaller one is good for about 404 km, the bigger one targets 490 km on a charge.
The 51.4 kWh version makes 171 hp and 255 Nm, enough for a 0 to 100 km/h run in 8.4 seconds. The entry battery pairs with a 135 hp motor, and both drive the front wheels.
Family-First Packaging
This is a three-row MPV, not an SUV pretending to seat seven. It is based on the Carens Clavis people already know, but swaps the engine for batteries, keeping the practicality and dropping the fuel stops.
Kia loads it with the screens, connected features and safety kit Indian buyers now expect, wrapped in a familiar, easy-to-park shape.
With the same 255 Nm on tap whichever battery you choose, even the base car should feel brisk around town and easy on a full load of passengers.
Charging and Cover
Home charging runs through a 7.4 kW or 11 kW AC unit, with a full top-up in roughly four to five hours depending on the pack. This is an EV designed around overnight charging rather than motorway splash-and-dash.
Kia backs it with an eight-year, 160,000 km warranty, clearly aimed at buyers nervous about going electric. Bookings open on July 22, with prices from 17.99 lakh rupees.
Worth Watching
It is an India-first launch, but a clever one. An affordable electric MPV with up to 490 km of range fills a gap rivals have ignored, and plenty of families elsewhere would take a look if Kia exports the idea.
