Introduced in 1988 as the successor to the B11 4.0, the B12 was initially built using the platform of the BMW 7 Series (E32). Subsequent generations of the B12 were based on the BMW 7 Series (E38) and the BMW 8 Series (E31). The B12 production spanned over a decade, with the series ceasing in 2001 coinciding with the discontinuation of the 7 Series (E38) models.
