The Austin A40 Devon is a compact four-door saloon produced by the British Motor Corporation predecessor Austin Motor Company from 1947 to 1952. It was among the first postwar Austin models to adopt a more modern, full-width body style, moving away from the prewar upright coachwork that had defined earlier Austin designs. The Devon was powered by a four-cylinder overhead-valve engine and was sold alongside the two-door Dorset variant, which shared the same mechanical platform but saw considerably lower sales volumes. The model established the A40 nameplate that Austin would continue with subsequent designs, including the later Farina-bodied A40 of the late 1950s.
