The BMW E21 is the first generation of the BMW 3 Series, a compact executive car range produced from June 1975 to December 1983. It replaced the BMW 02 Series and was offered exclusively in a two-door coupé body style, with select convertibles made by Baur. Unlike its predecessor, the E21 did not offer a 'Touring' body style with a sloped rear hatch.
Initially, the E21 models featured carbureted four-cylinder petrol engines in 1.6 L, 1.8 L, and 2.0 L sizes. Fuel injection was introduced in late 1975 with the 320i model. In 1977, a carbureted inline six-cylinder engine replaced both the 320 and 320i models. A detuned version of the four-cylinder injection engine was also made available in the U.S.
