The BMW M3 Touring, internally designated G81, marks a significant moment in the history of BMW M, as it's the first time the high-performance M3 badge has been officially applied to a station wagon (Touring) body style for mass production. This highly anticipated model combines the exhilarating performance of the M3 with the practicality and versatility of a family-friendly wagon, a combination long desired by enthusiasts worldwide. Under the bonnet, the G81 M3 Touring is powered by the same S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine found in its sedan and coupe siblings. In its standard form, the M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive delivers a robust 375 kW (510 hp) and 650 Nm of torque. This power is channeled through an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission to BMW's intelligent M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which is rear-biased and can even be switched to a pure rear-wheel-drive mode for track use when the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is deactivated. This formidable powertrain allows the M3 Touring to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.6 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h, or 280 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package. More recently, a more potent M3 CS Touring variant has been introduced, boosting power to 405 kW (550 hp) and reducing the 0-100 km/h sprint to 3.5 seconds, with an increased top speed of 300 km/h. Visually, the G81 M3 Touring distinguishes itself with its aggressive M-specific design cues. This includes the prominent vertical kidney grille, wide flared wheel arches accommodating the larger track width, aerodynamic M exterior mirrors, and a distinctive rear bumper with a diffuser housing the signature quad exhaust tailpipes. Despite its performance focus, the G81 retains the core practicality of a 3 Series Touring, offering a generous 500 liters of boot space with the rear seats up, expandable to 1,510 liters when folded down. The M3 Touring's chassis has been meticulously engineered to handle its increased power and weight. It features adaptive M suspension, M-specific steering, and an active M differential to provide exceptional agility and precise handling. The integrated M braking system offers customizable pedal feel, allowing drivers to select between "Comfort" and "Sport" settings. Inside, the M3 Touring blends sportiness with modern luxury. It features BMW's Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen with M-specific graphics and features like the M Drift Analyser and lap timer. M Sport seats are standard, with optional M Carbon bucket seats available for those seeking a more track-focused experience. The G81 M3 Touring's global production commenced in November 2022. While it has been met with widespread acclaim in markets where it's available, it is not offered in North America, much to the disappointment of many enthusiasts in that region. Nonetheless, the BMW M3 Touring stands as a compelling and unique proposition, offering a rare blend of everyday usability and genuine high-performance thrills in a single, distinct package.
