Bond Cars Ltd, a British automotive company, initially made a mark with its pioneering approach to microcar design. The company began operations under the name Sharp's Commercials Ltd, launching its first car, the Bond Minicar, in 1949. This vehicle was notable for its three-wheeled design, which offered tax advantages and affordability, becoming a symbol of post-war British ingenuity in automotive engineering. The original Bond Minicar, later dubbed the Mark A, was a testament to minimalist design. It featured a lightweight aluminum body and an air-cooled Villiers engine, establishing a reputation for economic and practical transport solutions in the UK's burgeoning automobile market. However, by the 1960s, competition and changing tax regulations led to a decline in sales, with the last Minicar rolling off the assembly line in 1966. In 1969, Bond Cars Ltd underwent significant transformation when it was acquired by Reliant. Under new ownership, the Bond brand took a more whimsical turn with the introduction of the Bond Bug in 1970. This vehicle, a striking three-wheeled sports car, was designed by Tom Karen of Ogle Design. Despite its innovative look and performance that pushed beyond the typical speeds of three-wheelers, the Bond Bug did not achieve significant commercial success and was discontinued in the mid-1970s as the company focused on the more conventional four-wheeled market with models like the Reliant Robin. Today, Bond Cars Ltd is remembered for its distinctive contributions to the microcar segment and its bold foray into the design of unique three-wheeled vehicles, epitomizing a blend of practicality and British eccentricity in automotive history.
