Even though the original company went bankrupt in 1982, a new "DeLorean Motor Company" based in Texas bought the remaining original parts and tooling. Today, you can still buy a "new" DMC-12 built from 40-year-old original stock.
As a marketing stunt with American Express, the company planned to build 100 DeLoreans plated in 24-karat gold for "Gold Card" members. Only two were ever sold, and they remain some of the rarest collector cars in the world.
