Franklin Automobile Company, founded in 1902 by engineer John Wilkinson and businessman Herbert H. Franklin, was an American pioneer in air-cooled engine technology and luxury vehicles. Their first car, the Franklin Model A, introduced in 1902, featured a groundbreaking air-cooled engine, eschewing the conventional water-cooled systems of the time. This not only reduced the vehicle's weight but also enhanced reliability, a hallmark that defined Franklin's early years. Franklin's commitment to air-cooled engines continued throughout its history, contributing to its reputation for building high-performance, luxury cars.
