The GAZelle is a series of light commercial vehicles, including pickup trucks, vans, and minibuses, produced by Russian car manufacturer GAZ. Developed in response to the demand for a Ford Transit or VW T4 class vehicle in the Russian market during the transition from the Soviet Union to a market economy, the GAZelle shares parts with GAZ's passenger cars, particularly the GAZ-31029 model. Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Riga Autobus Factory in Latvia manufactured minibuses, which were now needed to be sold to the Russian market for hard currency. GAZ seized this opportunity and quickly developed the GAZelle, which, along with its lighter version, Sobol, became leading products in the Russian van and light truck market as well as in other CIS countries. The design of the GAZelle draws inspiration from the 1986 Ford Transit but has seen minimal upgrades over the years. Despite this, it has maintained its popularity in the Russian market. The name "GAZelle" is a play on the company's name, GAZ, and signifies the agility and speed associated with a gazelle. Overall, the GAZelle is a successful series of vehicles that has captured a significant portion of the market in Russia and the CIS countries due to its reliability, versatility, and association with the well-known GAZ brand.
