The VAZ-2101 "Zhiguli," fondly called "Kopeyka," is a compact sedan car manufactured by AvtoVAZ in the Soviet Union. Launched in 1970, it was the company's inaugural product and belonged to the small passenger car category in Soviet classifications. Derived from the Italian Fiat 124, the VAZ-2101 underwent significant modifications to better suit the challenging Russian driving environment. With its roots in the Fiat 124, a winner of the 1967 European Car of the Year, the VAZ-2101 was specifically tailored for the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc. The model was so successful that it was later rebranded and exported to Western markets under the Lada marque
