The Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage is a purpose-built sports racing car produced by Maserati from 1959 to 1961, developed to compete in international endurance and sports car racing during that era. It takes its distinctive nickname from its extraordinarily complex tubular spaceframe chassis, which used hundreds of small-diameter steel tubes welded together in an intricate lattice structure, keeping weight exceptionally low while maintaining rigidity. The car was powered by a twin-cam four-cylinder engine and achieved notable results at events including the Nürburgring 1000km, with drivers such as Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney campaigning it at the highest levels of motorsport. A follow-up variant, the Tipo 63, adapted the Birdcage concept to accept a rear-mounted engine in response to the shift toward mid-engine layouts that was reshaping sports car racing in the early 1960s.
