Matra

Matra, an abbreviation for Mécanique Aviation TRAction, started its journey in the automotive world in 1964, although its origins in aerospace and weaponry date back to the early 20th century. Founded in France by Jean-Luc Lagardère, Matra's initial foray into the car market was marked by innovation and a flair for racing. The brand's first notable road car, the Matra Djet, launched in 1965, was unique for its mid-engine design and fiberglass body, characteristics that underscored Matra's commitment to integrating racing technology into consumer vehicles. Over the decades, Matra's identity became synonymous with performance and innovation, especially highlighted by their success in Formula 1, where they clinched the world championship in 1969. This racing pedigree was successfully translated into their consumer models, which often featured cutting-edge technology and design. Despite its illustrious past and engineering prowess, Matra's presence in the automotive industry has waned since their last car, the Avantime, ceased production in the early 2000s. Today, Matra no longer produces cars but has pivoted to focus on electric bicycles and mobility solutions, reflecting a shift in their strategic direction while still maintaining an innovative edge. This transition marks Matra's current phase, adapting to new market realities while honoring its rich legacy in automotive design and engineering.
