The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, now marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022, is a renowned grand touring sports car line that has been in production by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The "SL" designation stands for "Sport-Leicht" in German, which translates to "Sport Light" in English, emphasizing the car's focus on sportiness and lightweight construction. The inception of the SL-Class dates back to the 300 SL racing sports car introduced in 1952, initially not intended for street production. However, in 1954, American importer Max Hoffman proposed the idea of creating a street version of the 300 SL, targeting wealthy performance car enthusiasts in the booming US luxury car market post-World War II. This proposal led to the production of the first road-legal SL, marking the beginning of a legacy of high-performance grand touring vehicles from Mercedes-Benz. The roots of the "SL" abbreviation remain uncertain, with speculation suggesting a possible connection to the 1931 Mercedes-Benz SSKL (Super Sport Kurz Leicht—Super Sport Short Light). The SL-Class has since evolved over decades, combining luxury, performance, and innovative technology to cater to discerning drivers seeking a balance of comfort and exhilarating driving experiences.
