The R170 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class compact luxury roadsters produced between 1995 and 2004. The vehicle utilized a shortened version of the W202 Mercedes C-Class platform and was designed to embody the characteristics of being sporty, light, and compact, which is reflected in its nameplate SLK (sportlich, leicht, kurz). Over 300,000 units of the first-generation SLK were manufactured before it was succeeded by the R171 SLK in 2004. The development of the SLK was influenced by the SLK I and SLK II concept cars, introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1994 and the Paris Motor Show in the same year, respectively. The key feature of the SLK was its innovative folding metal electro-hydraulic roof, known as the 'vario-roof,' which could be operated in just 25 seconds.
