Midas Cars, a British marque, began its journey in the world of automobiles with an intriguing mix of innovation and tradition. It all started in 1978 when Harold Dermott and his company, D&H Fibreglass Techniques, chose to adopt the aging Mini Marcos model. They infused new life into the design, thanks to Richard Oakes, launching the revamped model as the Midas at the 1978 Performance Car Show in London. This model featured a distinctive composite body, abandoning the traditional chassis for a design that integrated the Mini's running gear with innovative structural changes. The brand saw a significant evolution under the guidance of figures like Gordon Murray, who suggested improvements that included aerodynamic enhancements. These changes came into play with the introduction of models like the Midas Gold and Midas Bronze, expanding the lineup and refining the vehicle's design and performance. However, the company faced several challenges, including a devastating fire in 1989 that halted production and pushed Midas Cars into liquidation. The marque found new life periodically through various ownerships, such as Pastiche Cars and later GTM Cars, which continued to develop the range until the early 2000s. Despite repeated attempts to revive and sustain the brand, Midas Cars eventually succumbed to financial difficulties, ceasing operations in 2003. Today, while the production has ceased, the legacy of Midas Cars lives on through enthusiast clubs and the classic car community, highlighting a history marked by both innovation and the relentless challenges of automotive manufacturing.
