Neorion

Neorion, a venerable name in Greek industry, traces its roots back to the early 19th century, initially flourishing in the maritime sector before venturing into automotive manufacturing. Founded in 1861 to support the Greek Steamship Company, Neorion was involved in diverse industrial activities, ranging from shipbuilding to the production of steam engines and heavy artillery. It was during the late 1960s and early 1970s under the ownership of the Greek millionaire Giannis Goulandris that Neorion expanded into the automotive field by acquiring Enfield Automotive, a company focused on electric vehicles. This venture led to the creation of Enfield-Neorion and the introduction of pioneering electric cars designed for rugged terrains and unique applications, like the Neorion Chicago and the E 8000 Bicini. The Neorion Chicago, in particular, was a luxury vehicle that combined opulent retro styling with robust 4x4 capabilities, designed by the Greek engineer Georgios Michael. Despite its innovative design and advanced features, the production was short-lived; only a few models were ever made, with production ceasing in 1976 due to restrictive Greek market regulations. Today, Neorion's foray into the automotive sector remains a notable chapter in the history of Greek industry, reflecting both the ambition and the challenges of manufacturing in a smaller market. The company continues to operate in the shipbuilding sector, diversifying into the construction of luxury yachts and engaging in various industrial activities.
