The Dodge Charger (L-body) is a compact two-door hatchback/fastback manufactured by Dodge between 1981 and 1987. This subcompact car, part of Chrysler's front-wheel-drive L platform, was designed to offer a sporty and stylish option in the market. The model shared its platform with the Plymouth Turismo, a companion vehicle marketed by Plymouth during the same period. In an effort to introduce a more dynamic and sporty design, Chrysler made modifications to the existing L-platform for the Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon four-door hatchbacks in 1979. This involved shortening the wheelbase from 99.2 to 96.5 inches to create a sleeker two-door model. The result was the Dodge Omni
