SMZ

SMZ, the Serpukhov Motor Plant (Serpukhovskoy Mototsikletny Zavod), was a Soviet-era manufacturer based in Serpukhov, Russia, best known for producing small, state-subsidized microcars designed specifically for disabled citizens. The plant operated from the late 1940s onward, supplying vehicles through the Soviet social welfare system rather than through conventional retail channels. Its most recognized models were the S-3L and the S-ZA, the latter being a simple, two-stroke, single-cylinder microcar with hand controls and a rudimentary open body that became a familiar sight across the USSR. The S-ZD followed as a modestly updated successor, retaining the same basic formula of minimal engineering and low cost. Production at Serpukhov eventually transitioned to the Oka minicar under SeAZ, and SMZ as a distinct marque ceased to exist as Soviet industry was reorganized.
