The Tarrant automobile, a pioneering brand in the Australian automotive landscape, was established by Colonel Harley Tarrant in Melbourne in 1901. This marked a historic milestone as the Tarrant was the first petrol engine motor car manufactured in Victoria, Australia. Initially, Tarrant's venture into automobile manufacturing stemmed from his earlier experiences building internal combustion engines during the 1890s. Despite the ambition, the economic feasibility of competing against more technologically advanced overseas models soon led to a strategic pivot. By 1908, Colonel Tarrant shifted his focus from manufacturing to becoming the Victorian distributor for Ford automobiles, signaling the cessation of Tarrant car production after only about 16 vehicles were produced. Throughout its brief operational span, the company's output remained limited but notable for its pioneering role in the local industry. The legacy of Tarrant automobiles is preserved in the annals of automotive history with the last remaining Tarrant car now housed by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria since 2002. This particular model also gained commemorative recognition when it was featured on an Australian postage stamp in 1984, celebrating early Australian automotive history. Despite its short-lived production run, the Tarrant brand remains a significant chapter in the development of the automotive industry in Australia.
