The Toyota Tercel, produced by Toyota from 1978 to 1999 in five generations, was a subcompact car positioned between the Corolla and the Starlet. It was manufactured at the Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Japan, utilizing the same platform as the Cynos and the Starlet. The Tercel was marketed under various names including Toyota Corolla II and Toyota Corsa, sold at different dealership locations in Japan. A key feature of the Tercel was that it was the first front-wheel drive vehicle made by Toyota. Despite this, it had a longitudinally mounted engine which set it apart from other front-wheel drive Toyotas. With different body configurations available, the Tercel catered to a wide range of consumer preferences and needs. As the Tercel evolved through its generations, it became associated with different dealership networks. For example, from the second generation onwards, it was distributed through the Vista Store network as its sibling, the Corolla II, was exclusive to Corolla Store locations. This strategic differentiation allowed Toyota to effectively market and sell the Tercel to its target audience. In 1999, the Tercel was replaced by the Platz model, marking the end of its production after a successful run in the subcompact car segment. The Tercel's legacy as Toyota's first front-wheel drive vehicle, combined with its versatility and market positioning, solidified its place in automotive history.
