The name "Previa" reflects Toyota's vision of the vehicle as a preview of future minivan technologies. It was positioned as the second-largest minivan in Toyota's Japanese lineup, following the Alphard/Vellfire in size and luxury. The first generation of the Previa, conceptualized by Toyota designer Tokuo Fukuichi and Calty designer David Doyle in 1987, debuted on January 27, 1990.
