The Mk III 427 replaced the Mk II's 289 cubic inch small-block with a 7.0-litre Ford FE big-block V8 producing 425 hp, necessitating a substantially wider and reshaped body with flared wheel arches to accommodate the larger engine and wider track. The chassis was upgraded to a coil-spring suspension setup on all four corners, a significant departure from the transverse leaf springs used on earlier Cobras. A top speed of 265 km/h made it one of the fastest production cars available in the mid-1960s.
