While the legendary twin-turbo V8 is the heart of the F40, there were a few variations that made it even more special! The Road Car Engine: The standard F40 came with a 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 (coded F120A). It produced 478 horsepower and was the first production car to break the 200 mph barrier. Later models (after 1990) for the U.S. market featured a catalytic converter, which gave them a slightly different engine spec (F120D) to meet emissions regulations. The Race Engines: For racing, the F40 was pushed to the extreme with more powerful engines. F40 LM: The Le Mans (LM) spec car was a race-prepped version with a significantly boosted engine. Power jumped to over 700 horsepower, and it featured bigger turbos, larger intercoolers, and a lighter chassis. F40 Competizione/GTE: Later race versions like the Competizione and GTE pushed the envelope even further, with engine modifications for different racing classes, and power that could exceed 750 horsepower. So while every F40 roars with the sound of a turbocharged V8, there's a whole lot more to its engineering story!
