The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, also known as the 'Evo', is a sports sedan and rally car manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 to 2016. With a total of ten official versions released, each model is usually denoted by a Roman numeral. Across all generations, the Evo utilizes a two-liter intercooled turbo inline four-cylinder engine and an all-wheel drive system. Originally created for the Japanese market, the Evolution series gained popularity through "grey import" markets, leading Mitsubishi to offer these vehicles through Ralliart dealer networks in the UK and Europe starting in 1998. The eighth-generation Evo was also exported to the US in 2003 after the successful entry of the Subaru Impreza WRX in the American market the year prior.
It is noteworthy that before the Evolution IX debuted in 2005, all domestic-market Evo models were restricted by an informal agreement among Japanese car manufacturers to limit power outputs to under 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). Despite this limitation, the Evo series gained a reputation for its performance, handling, and rallying success.
