People use car meet, cruise, show and cars and coffee as if they mean the same thing, and then turn up to the wrong sort of event with the wrong sort of car at the wrong time of day. They are different things, with different crowds, different hours and different unwritten rules.

Here is what each one actually is, so you can pick the one you will enjoy.

Cars and coffee

A morning meet, usually in a car park, usually on a weekend, usually finished before lunch. People arrive early, park up, walk the rows, drink something, and drive home. There is no judging, no entry fee, and nothing to win.

When: early. The good ones fill between 7 and 8am and thin out by 10. Arriving at 9:30 to a meet that started at 7 means looking at empty spaces.

What turns up: everything. That is the appeal. A restored classic parked next to a new supercar parked next to someone's clean daily driver.

Who it suits: anyone, including people with nothing special to drive. Nobody is checking. It is the easiest first meet to attend.

The unwritten rules: park straight, do not rev on the way out, and do not touch other people's cars. The exit is where cars and coffee meets get shut down, so the way you leave matters more than the way you arrive.

Night meets

An evening version, typically in a car park or an industrial area, often more modified and more social than the morning crowd. Lighting changes what looks good, so night meets favour cars built for presence: paint, wheels, exhaust, interior lighting.

When: from early evening, often running late.

What turns up: more modified cars, more stance and JDM, more people who came to talk rather than to look.

Who it suits: people who like the social side more than the automotive history side.

The honest warning: night meets are the format most likely to attract attention from police and from people who want to do skids in front of a phone camera. A well-run one has organisers who shut that down. A poorly run one gets moved on, and takes the venue with it. If you care about these events continuing, the single most useful thing you can do is not be the person doing the burnout.

Cruises

A drive, not a gathering. A group meets at a start point, drives a planned route together, and usually stops somewhere for a break or a feed. The point is the driving and the convoy, not the parking.

When: often a morning start for a half day, though evening and overnight runs exist.

What turns up: depends entirely on the organiser. A club cruise is club cars. An open cruise is whatever shows.

Who it suits: people who would rather drive their car than stand next to it.

The unwritten rules: keep the gap to the car in front sensible, do not block intersections to keep the group together, and if you cannot keep up, let people past and meet them at the stop. Nobody minds a slow car. Everyone minds a dangerous one.

Show and shine

A judged event. Cars are entered, parked in classes, and judged on presentation, with trophies at the end. Entry usually costs something, and often supports a charity or a club.

When: a full day, typically with cars in place by mid-morning and judging over the middle of the day. You generally cannot leave early without asking, because a gap in the rows spoils the display and the organisers need the ground clear at one time.

What turns up: cars prepared for it. Detailing, engine bays cleaned, bonnets up, display boards with build details.

Who it suits: people who enjoy preparing a car as much as driving it, and anyone who wants honest feedback on their work.

Worth knowing: classes are the whole game. A tidy standard car in the right class beats a heavily modified one in the wrong class, and organisers would far rather you asked which class you belong in than guessed.

Car shows and expos

Bigger, usually ticketed, often indoors or at a showground, with traders, displays and feature cars alongside entered vehicles. The scale changes the experience: you are a visitor at an event rather than a participant at a meet.

Who it suits: anyone, including people who do not own an interesting car at all. It is the most spectator-friendly format.

Club runs and club days

Organised by a car club for its members, sometimes open to visitors. The car is usually the excuse rather than the point: it is a group of people who know each other going somewhere together.

If you have a car that fits a club's interest, this is the format that turns going to meets into knowing people. Most clubs will happily have a visitor along before you join anything.

Track days and driver training

Not a meet at all, but people often lump them in. You drive your own car on a circuit or a skid pan, either against the clock or purely to learn. Worth knowing they exist, because a lot of people who start at cars and coffee end up here.

We have written these up separately in the guide to motorsport disciplines.

Quick comparison

Cars and coffee: morning, free, no judging, everything welcome, over by 10.
Night meet: evening, free, social, more modified, behaviour matters most.
Cruise: a group drive with a stop, not a car park.
Show and shine: judged, entry fee, all day, classes matter.
Show or expo: ticketed, big, spectator event.
Club run: members and guests, social, the way in to a scene.

If it is your first one

Go to a cars and coffee. Arrive early, park where you are directed, leave the car and walk around, and talk to someone about their car rather than yours. Nobody there is assessing what you drove in. The person with the most attention on their car is usually the one most pleased that somebody asked.

Find car meets and shows near you, or browse car clubs if you want the club side of it. If you run a meet that is not listed, add it: listings are free.
