Before subtle was cool, Australia went the other way entirely. Twenty inch wheels, chrome everywhere, tribal graphics and a boot full of televisions. They called it sexspec, and for about a decade it owned the country.

Sex on Wheels

The name is exactly as blunt as it sounds. The whole idea was to make a car look like sex on wheels, and nobody involved was embarrassed about it. Restraint was not part of the brief.

The scene ran from the late 1990s until around 2007. Its peak lined up neatly with the first Fast and Furious films, and Australian builders took that energy and pushed it further than almost anyone.

Twenties or Nothing

Wheels came first. Twenty inches was the entry point, and plenty went bigger. The car dropped hard onto them, because a big wheel in a big gap defeats the entire purpose.

Chrome went on everything that would hold it. Paint budgets ran past ten thousand dollars, in colours that changed depending on where you stood. Tribal vinyl graphics stretched down the flanks.

The Boot Was the Point

Open the boot and you found the real investment. Enormous stereo systems sat behind custom built panels, often with several screens fitted where luggage used to go.

Scissor doors and suicide doors were common. So were exposed nitrous bottles mounted where everyone could see them, which tells you plenty about the priorities. This was a scene built to be looked at.

Custom or Nothing

Here is the part people forget. Sexspec was not about bolting on catalogue parts. The whole culture rewarded fabrication, one off panels and work nobody else had. Buying the same kit as the bloke down the road missed the point completely.

That obsession with individuality is why the best examples still stop people now. Somebody sat in a shed and built that, by hand, because they wanted it.

How It Died

Around 2008 the mood flipped. JDM style arrived with its quieter, tidier, motorsport flavoured approach, and suddenly chrome and tribal graphics looked dated overnight.

The scene faded fast, and for years it was the punchline. Lately that has started to turn. A generation who grew up seeing these cars now looks back with real affection, and clean survivors are getting hunted down. Loud, excessive and completely unbothered, sexspec is finally getting its respect.
