Decoration Truck

Dekotora is short for decoration truck. The name says it all. Owners cover their trucks in chrome, neon, gold plate and hand painted art until the original vehicle almost disappears.

The scene exploded after a series of 1970s films about a lovable trucker turned the decorated rig into a folk hero. Drivers wanted their own, and an art form was born.

A Feast of Light

The star of any dekotora is light. Hundreds of bulbs and LEDs line every edge. At night these trucks glow like carnival rides, throwing colour across the road for all to see.

Add mirror polished stainless panels, engraved metalwork and murals of dragons, warriors and landscapes. Many carry huge illuminated signs above the cab. Some even play music and sound effects.

Serious Money, Serious Craft

This is not a cheap hobby. A top dekotora build can cost as much as a nice home. The metalwork alone takes skilled craftsmen months, and the best trucks are true one off creations.

Every element is bespoke. Custom bumpers stretch far beyond the cab. Exhaust stacks rise like chimneys. Even the mudflaps get engraved and lit. No two dekotora trucks are ever quite the same, because each one is a personal work of art shaped over years.

Owners often still use these trucks for real work by day, then bring them out for meets and charity runs. The pride is total. Every panel reflects the owner's taste and status.

Community and Charity

Dekotora crews gather at organised events to show off and compete. The atmosphere is warm and family friendly, a world away from the outlaw image of some car scenes.

Many groups use their eye catching trucks for good, running toy drives and visiting children's hospitals. The trucks that look wildest often carry the biggest hearts.

Fading but Fighting

Stricter rules and an ageing membership have thinned the dekotora ranks over the years. Younger drivers face higher costs and tighter regulations.

Yet the culture holds on. Dedicated owners keep building, and the trucks still draw crowds wherever they appear. Dekotora remains one of the most joyful and jaw dropping corners of the vehicle world, proof that even a work truck can become art.
