The car that kick-started the EV age has reinvented itself. The third-generation Nissan Leaf has dropped the frumpy hatchback look and reemerged as a sharp little electric crossover.

From Hatch to Crossover

The old Leaf always looked a bit awkward. The new one is a proper subcompact SUV, with a higher driving position, cleaner styling and far more presence on the road.

Nissan invented the mainstream EV with the original Leaf back in 2010, long before Tesla went mass-market. Reinventing it now is overdue.

It is a smart move. Buyers want crossovers, not hatchbacks, so Nissan reshaped its most famous EV to match what people actually buy.

Range and Power

There are two batteries, a 52 kWh standard pack and a larger 75 kWh option. The big one is good for up to 303 miles on the EPA cycle.

Charging is quicker too, and the bigger battery finally puts range anxiety to bed for most drivers.

Power climbs too, to as much as 214 hp, so the new Leaf is quicker and easier to live with than the car it replaces.

Charging Made Easy

Crucially, the Leaf now has a native Tesla-style NACS port alongside the usual connector. That opens up the huge Supercharger network without a clumsy adapter.

Sharing parts with the Ariya also keeps costs down, which shows up in the price.

It also shares its underpinnings with the larger Ariya, so this is a properly modern EV rather than a warmed-over old one.

Inside the Cabin

The interior gets dual digital displays, wireless smartphone mirroring and Nissan's full Safety Shield 360 suite as standard. There is more space for people and luggage too.

It feels like a real step up, the kind of cabin that no longer asks buyers to compromise just because they went electric.

The Price Is Right

The headline is the sticker. The 2026 Leaf starts below 30,000 dollars, which keeps it among the most affordable EVs you can buy.

Affordable, practical and finally good-looking, the Leaf might matter more now than it did when it launched the whole movement.

The Leaf walked so other EVs could run. This new one is finally ready to keep up.

With looks people actually want and a price they can afford, the Leaf could quietly become one of Nissan's most important cars again.
