Before Instagram, before Facebook groups, before anyone called it a build thread, your car had a home page. It had a photo gallery, a parts list, a guestbook and a rating. It lived on CarDomain.

For a whole generation of car people, that was the first place their project existed online. Now it is gone, and most of its members never got a goodbye.

It Started With Car Stereos

CarDomain launched in Seattle in September 1998. It began life as SoundDomain, a place to show off car audio installs. Subwoofer boxes, amp racks and head units glowing behind tinted glass.

The stereo crowd kept posting the rest of the car too, so the site followed them. Vehicle profiles took over, the name changed, and CarDomain became the place to put your whole ride online.

One Car, One Page

The idea was simple and years ahead of its time. Every car got its own page. You uploaded photos, listed every mod, wrote up the story and kept it updated as the build grew.

Then other members turned up. They rated your ride, left comments and signed your guestbook. Guestbook counts became a currency, forums ran threads just for swapping signatures, and at least one magazine picked entrants for a build challenge partly on how many entries a car had collected.

By 2006 the site had more than 1.5 million members and close to 400,000 ride pages. By 2012 it was reporting over 2 million registered users and nearly a million vehicle profiles.

A Time Capsule of Tuner Culture

Open an old CarDomain page today and the whole era comes flooding back. Body kits, neon underglow, giant wings on front-wheel-drive hatchbacks, chrome on everything, and Lambo doors because why not.

It was not all street racing movie tributes either. Restored muscle cars, lifted trucks, track hatches and spotless classics sat right alongside them. Everyone was in the same place, and that was the point.

Then the Internet Moved On

The cracks showed in late 2008. As advertising budgets collapsed, CarDomain cut about half its staff. In 2009 it merged with StreetFire, a car video site, and CarDomain alone was still pulling more than 3 million visitors a month.

But the people were drifting. Facebook made it easy to share photos with friends who were not car people, and forums kept the deep build threads. Later, Instagram turned every car into a grid of square photos.

In 2012 CarDomain was sold to a big automotive magazine publisher, the company that later became Motor Trend Group. A community built by its members was now one small site inside a large media business.

No Farewell Party

There was no big announcement anyone can point to. The site was still loading in mid 2021. Not long after, the address started redirecting elsewhere, and by 2022 the ride pages had stopped loading altogether.

If there was an export button or a final warning email, very few members remember getting one. More than two decades of photos and build stories simply went dark.

How to Find Your Old Ride

The good news is that a lot of CarDomain still survives in the Internet Archive. Not every page was saved, but plenty were.

Search your old email. Look for \"cardomain\" in any inbox you used back then. Notification emails often linked straight to your car's page.
Paste that address into the Wayback Machine. If a snapshot exists, your photos and write-up may still be there.
Save what you find. Download the photos and copy the text somewhere you control. Archives are not forever either.

Drivesome Picks Up Where CarDomain Left Off

CarDomain got the big idea right. A car is not a single photo. It is a story that runs for years, through owners, parts, setbacks and the day it all finally comes together.

Drivesome is built on that same idea. Think of it as the CarDomain replacement, rebuilt with two decades of technology the original never had.

Your Car Gets Its Own Page Again

Every car you add to your Drivesome garage gets its own page. Post about it with a car tag and the post lands on that page automatically, so the build history stacks up while you just keep posting.

No more typing out specs from memory either. They come from a car database of makes, models and generations.

The AI Knows What You Drive

Post a photo and Car Vision, Drivesome's AI, works out the make, model and generation, then offers you the car tag. Two cars in one shot? It handles that too.

It goes further. If someone else photographs your car at a meet, Drivesome can recognise it and suggest that photo for your car's page. Back in the day, a stranger's shot of your car at a show was gone forever unless they happened to find you.

The Guestbook Grew Up

Remember begging for guestbook signatures? Now photos from real car events turn into virtual car shows, where anyone can swipe and vote on the cars that turned up. Winners take home trophies and DCred.

DCred is earned by posting, commenting and taking part, and it moves you through seven ranks from Rookie to D King. It cannot be bought or traded, so no swap threads this time.

So if your old Civic, Mustang or Silvia is sitting in an archive somewhere, go and dig it up. Then join Drivesome, add it to your garage and give it a proper home again. Those photos deserve better than a dead link.
