The Lada Samara is a front-wheel-drive compact hatchback produced by AvtoVAZ in Russia from 1984 to 2013, representing the manufacturer's first significant departure from the rear-wheel-drive, Fiat-derived architecture that defined its earlier lineup. The range launched with the 2108, a three-door hatchback introduced in 1984, followed by the 2109 five-door variant from 1987, both sharing a transversely mounted engine layout that was a genuine engineering step forward for the brand. The Samara became one of the most recognizable budget cars in the Soviet and post-Soviet market, and its long production run reflected both its commercial importance to AvtoVAZ and the economic realities of the markets it served. Notable variants included the 21099 notchback saloon and later the updated Samara 2 series, which carried the basic platform well into the 2000s with revised styling and incremental mechanical refinements.
