The Renault Caravelle, also known as Renault Floride outside of North America and Britain, was a sports car produced by Renault between 1958 and 1968 in a single generation. Designed by Pietro Frua of Carrozzeria Ghia, the Caravelle featured a rear-engine, rear-drive layout based on the platform and engine of the Renault Dauphine. The car was intended to compete with the Volkswagen Bug/Beetle, which was gaining popularity in North America. Renault's decision to create the Caravelle came after their US dealers proposed the idea at a convention in Florida, highlighting the need for a stylish coupé/cabriolet version of the Dauphine to enhance Renault's image
