The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ are collaborative efforts between Toyota and Subaru, manufactured at Subaru's Gunma assembly plant. These 2+2 sports cars feature a naturally-aspirated boxer engine, front-engined, rear-wheel-drive configuration, and a 53/47 front/rear weight balance for optimal performance. The design was inspired by Toyota's AE86, known for its agile handling and popularity in various racing disciplines.
In terms of branding, the first-generation model was named the 86 in several regions such as Asia, Australia, North America, South Africa, and South America, while Europe received it as the Toyota GT86. New Zealand saw both the 86 and GT86 versions, with the Toyota FT86 in select areas
