The Jeep CJ models, produced from 1945 to 1986, were versatile off-road vehicles and compact pickups derived from the military Jeep used during World War II. The first in the series was the 1945 Willys "Universal Jeep," notable for being the world's first mass-produced civilian four-wheel-drive vehicle. Subsequent models, named CJ for "civilian Jeep," retained the ruggedness of their military predecessor while incorporating features for the consumer market, such as a tailgate and relocated spare wheel. Willys-Overland, the primary manufacturer of the wartime Jeep, adapted the design for commercial use in response to post-war demand. The CJ line featured a separate body and frame, sturdy drivetrain, and rigid live axles
