While the rest of the world raced to go faster, one scene chose to slow down and go low. Lowriding is not about speed. It is about pride, community and cruising with your car sitting on the ground.

Born From Community

Lowriding grew from Chicano communities in the American Southwest in the years after the Second World War. It became a proud expression of Mexican American identity, culture and craftsmanship.

The motto says it all. Low and slow. Where hot rodders wanted to blast down a strip, lowriders wanted to cruise the boulevard slowly, seen and admired by all.

Hydraulics Change the Game

Early lowriders were simply dropped as low as possible, until laws banned cars that sat too low. The scene answered with genius. They fitted hydraulic systems borrowed from aircraft.

Now a lowrider could drop to the deck to cruise, then lift up to stay legal or clear a bump. Better still, the hydraulics let cars hop, lean and dance. Hopping contests became a scene of their own.

Those contests are a spectacle in themselves. Cars rear up on their hydraulics, front wheels clawing at the air, judged on how high they can jump. Serious hoppers run reinforced frames and banks of batteries just to feed the pumps.

The Rolling Canvas

The classic lowrider base is a 1958 to 1964 Chevrolet Impala, though many models wear the style. Whatever the car, the finish is where the artistry lives.

Deep candy paint, intricate murals and pinstriping cover the panels. Wire wheels with whitewall tyres are almost required. Interiors get button tufted upholstery and chrome everywhere. Every surface shows devotion.

Clubs and Family

Lowriding lives through its car clubs. These groups are tight knit families that build together, cruise together and represent their communities with pride.

Shows and cruises are social events, full of music, food and generations of enthusiasts. The scene has always carried a message of unity and respect alongside the cars.

A Culture, Not a Trend

Lowriding has faced discrimination and legal battles for decades, yet it never bent. It has spread across the world while keeping its roots and meaning intact.

To reduce a lowrider to hydraulics and paint misses the heart of it. This is a culture of family, identity and expression that happens to ride on four wheels. Low, slow and overflowing with soul.
